The Year That Was(n't)

In what went on to be a 2008 full of crazy eights, looking back on it is a must. So inspired by ESPN’s Page 2, this is a chronological evolution of my version of 2008. With little exaggeration, onomatopoeia, personification, etc. I’ll see if I could look back on the year with a smile (‘coz I really ended in with a loud thud).

Relationships

Since my streak of 2,000+ days with a girlfriend ended in 2007, it has been a long road searching (or waiting) going back to the days when I think that I could settle down with someone and have family. So looking back on my relationships in 2008 that I though there were qualities that would be essential in having a long relationship, but ended imploding in front of my face.

Miss “Love” - Proximity to home, pretty face, established career, I was liked by her family – 2+ mos.
Miss “Hon” - Proximity to work, befriended her friends – 2+ mos.
Miss “Sweetie” - Proximity to home and work, open-minded – 1+ mo.
Miss “Nhie”- Availability anytime - <1 mo.

When you had 4 relationships in a year but the duration did NOT total even half the year, and you are 28… freakin’ 28 years old, say goodbye on starting a family before the age of 30, 31, 32…!

Dating

Of course, I had more than 6 months of dating the girls not mentioned above. As the classic Christian Oliver way, which is afraid of asking out around tens, dozens, scores of “dream girls” because of one invite to one of those and I was turned down. I’m so lacking of confidence (as one of the above would say).

Needless to say, I was back on my old habits, which is date and date any types of girls not hot enough for me, hoping to find the qualities that would make me exclusively date her…. but if she’s not hot enough for me in the first place, that’s half the battle lost already and even tougher for me because I had to find the qualities enough to comeback from a 37 point halftime deficit.

With my resiliency, I think I found one of those girls that I figured out how to like, but she blew it by being so Grade 5-ish considering that she’s into one of the most mature careers in mankind. At my age range, we must not be afraid anymore of the simple house rules set by our parents… needless to say, by our DRIVER…. yeah DRIVER!!! Kidding aside… really, the DRIVER!!!

Career

I’ve got nothing to say about my work in 2008 because it’s the only aspect of my life that was working for me during the year. As much as I would like to detail it… maybe in my coffee-table book decades from now.

Other Careers:

• I didn’t appear in an infomercial during 2008… which was a regression.
• Appeared for a photo shoot for the MSSC 10th anniversary… a progression.
• As a shooting guard, I came out of retirement to average 2.8 points per game for 4 games for the Red Devils… JJ Redick personified (Orlando Magic version).
• As a quarterback, threw for 3 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. On defense, made 4 tackles for the Red Team. Kurt Warner’s brother?
• As a volleyball player, made 2 service aces and scored on 3 kills for 4 games for Red… That’s why I work hard on being an analyst.
R&R

I got the first two R&R events for the year, the SLOGO contest and Ash Wednesday Mass. Naturally, I made my 1st teaser in which I have no idea how to make. I have really kicked off the year’s R&R activities with the eventual slogan, reinvented!

As a badminton hater, I have found fulfillment organizing “Monday Night Smash” as realized that a badminton tournament more than meets the eye! I was doing it all: scheduler, logistics, crowd control, official, scorer and even the PA announcer!

My baby, the Volleyball tournament “Spikin’ Saturday” made a very controversial debut that caused some disqualifications, forfeitures and debates. However, after weathering the storm (literally and figuratively), we were all witness to the successful return of Volleyball in MSSC. And my lady awardees… still make me speechless to date.

In four weeks, we watched our ranking in the Bowling tournament plummet from 1st to 2nd to 3rd to finish 4th. Good thing the “Expert” level tourney did not ran for 3 months. Better news is the Novice Level in which Red Team was the champion. The lesson Red Team and Novice really co-exist (R&R 2009, take note).

One thing about being an R&R Committee, unless you are enjoying your tasks assigned, you will not be able to enjoy the events you are handling. But since I do not enjoy the EK Rides, The Friendship Day was superb from the Registration Booth perspective, and it’s like I’ve seen the world (of girls). I do not swim, so I enjoyed the Summer Outing from the First-Aid Booth Perspective. I do not have a kid, so I enjoyed giving loot bags to the kids in the Halloween; after all, it’s Spongebob! And since I do not design clothes, I enjoyed the Christmas Party at the backside perspective of the Runway.

Economy

In a year that was very controversial economic-wise, oil price volatility, recession and local problems here in the Philippines, here is a brief table in PhP of my economic indicators. You'll differentiate the unscrupulous from not.

Item Start High End

Gasoline/liter 35 61 32
Peso/dollar 41 50 47
Shuttle to Makati 40 60 55
Jeepney Min. Fare 7.50 8.50 7.50
